Chapman was the first black man to swim across the English Channel in 1981 who completed a number of other unprecedented all-butterfly open water swims.
Charles Chapman, Jr.'s Open Water Swimming Career Highlights[edit]
- On 25 August 1981, he completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 12 hours 40 minutes at the age of 26.
- In 1984, he completed the first butterfly swim around Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco Bay, California.
- On 26 August 1988, he completed the first butterfly circumnavigation swim in the 45.8 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 9 hours 25 minutes 8 seconds.
- On 19 August 1989, he completed the 45.8 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 9 hours 45 minutes 21 seconds at the age of 45.
