- He attempted to swim around Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay, California twice but did not finish.
- He set a record for a circumnavigation swim around Alameda Island on his third attempt, finishing the 14.6-mile course in 7 hours 38 minutes 39.5 seconds on 19 August 1951 at the age of 47.
